Functions of Erosion Control Blankets Pg.1, 2, 3 (next page) |
|
Erosion Control Blankets (ECBs) are defined as roll-type
materials designed to reduce seed and soil loss and aid in the establishment
of vegetation. WEBTEC, Inc., offers a complete line of organic erosion
control blankets ranging from lightweight straw blankets to heavier, slower
degrading coconut blankets. Each blanket is stitched together using
biodegradable thread and held together using photodegradable plastic
netting. For longer-term protection TerraGuard Turf reinforcement mats, made
from polypropylene, are also available. TerraGuard
erosion control blankets hold seed in place, while absorbing rainfall impact
and wind forces. Their three-dimensional structure absorbs water while
maintaining close contact with the soil. This provides the ideal environment
for seed germination and reduces the risk of burn-out after
germination. The organic materials (straw or coconut) decompose as the
vegetation matures, thereby providing the vegetation with necessary
nutrients for growth. The blankets perform this in direct correlation with
the site's ability to re-vegetate itself. In cool, dry places where
vegetation grows slowly, the blanket will degrade slowly. In warm, moist
areas where vegetation develops rapidly, the blanket will degrade faster.
This process ensures the vegetation will receive nutrients as they are
needed. |

APPLICATIONS: |
Importance
ofErosion Control Global soil erosion destroys over 12 million acres of land each year. Nature slowly erodes itself. Human activities, such as construction clearance, greatly increase this process. The removal of vegetation exposes soil to the erosive forces of wind and water resulting in the loss of topsoil, minerals and nutrients. These losses result in costly cleanups and loss of land productivity. In the United States, The Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) has developed the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) to help reduce the costs and environmental impacts associated with erosion from construction sites. Erosion control blankets have been named a Best Management Practice by the EPA in helping reduce soil loss and establish new vegetation. |
